Meet the husband and wife team behind Cuvus amazing wood products!
Tell us your story! What inspired you to create your store?
Cuvus woodshop is an endeavor of a wife and husband team.
We were both working in an office environment for a long time and it felt that we are missing something, that we don’t have enough freedom to exercise our creativity. We’d talk about slowly moving away from office job into something a bit closer to our souls. We did a lot of “trial and error” rotations searching for what would be a good fit for us and ended up starting a small woodworking shop.
Tell us about your products? Why did you choose the products and where did you learn your craft?
We’re specializing in personalized wooden gifts. Notebooks, photo albums, cutting boards, bottle openers, coasters and a few others, with more and more different products reaching our shop every month. We enjoy placing a personalized accent on things that we use everyday to make them more interesting, more cozy and more close to us.
We’re self-learners and never had any training in woodworking. That’s why it took us quite a bit of time from opening the wood workshop until the first product that we were happy with.
What’s your favorite part of the making process?
Seeing the finished product for the first time. No matter how many products we’ve done, each and every one is different and we’re often surprised by how it turns out.
How do you stay motivated?
We’re always looking for new challenges and opportunities and these add variety and fun to our job. New designs, new products and new experiences. That in turn means that motivation is never an issue.
What is your favorite product you make or material you work with and why?
We’re working with oak most of the time and that would probably be our favorite. Wood in general is a very warm material to work with, especially with oak – its grain and color just look so natural and attractive.
Where do you turn for inspiration? What is your creative process like?
For us inspiration comes from day to day life. Usually we find ideas for our products by accident – at parents home, friend’s wedding, housewarming party, etc. When you notice a potential future product something clicks in your head. Then we usually discuss the design, the materials, the production process and start prototyping. If we are happy with the prototype, we continue on polishing it until we like the final result.
What are you hoping to accomplish through Just Artisan?
We’re hoping that Just Artisan will help us reach more people who will enjoy our products. This, in turn, would get us one step closer to doing this as a full time job.
What does success look like to you?
Success for us is to have happy returning customers.
