This unique ash wood bowl was turned while still “wet” and left to dry. The quick drying results in an appealing oblong warping and cracking due to shrinkage. It has been mended with copper wire. The repair is inspired by the Japanese concept of “Kintsugi”– elevating the flaws to a level of beauty. The result is a bowl that is more unique with a personality all it’s own. As delicate as it looks, it is a surprisingly strong sturdy bowl which is guaranteed to be a conversation piece for all who see it displayed in one’s home.
This beautiful cracked wooden bowl is made from an ash tree that was blown down in a nor’easter in Boston Massachusetts. Like all my bowls, I reuse and repurpose storm damaged and arborist cut trees from the wood chipper. All leftover debris from the bowl is repurposed into firewood, mulch or animal bedding for local farms.
This would make for a unique gift for any occasion such as weddings, holidays and housewarmings.
Obviously, this bowl can only be used for decorative or dried food items such as fruit and the like.
The finish is a layer of “Tried and True” brand natural Danish oil and “Old Fashioned Milk Paint” federal blue and sea foam green. The top coat is Tried and True’s linseed oil with bee’s wax finish. These coatings are food and child safe.
Measures 11 1/4″ wide by 3 1/2″ high.
