Creation Myth 008, Venera & Miques
This painting is a part of Anka Yanovna’s ‘Creation Myth’ series, an exploration of womanhood, pop culture and mythology through the lens of a scifi apocalypse.
Original artwork hand painted on a base of hammered aluminum. The metal was hand cut and hammered to form a curved square that extends from your wall in a gentle arc. Fascinating to look at from multiple angles, piece is ready to hang and does not require a frame.
At the center of the composition, drawing your eye like a black hole draws in light, a womanly figure sits on a pulsing red poppy, her form containing the depths of the galaxies. Her body appears to be a glitch of motion, or the merging of two figures, with two faces, three breasts and three legs existing comfortably as one. Each face looks at its nearest hand emitting silver stars and swirls, her cartoon eyes and full lips both a parody of beauty and containing a serenity and knowing that is somehow comforting. Her hair, a full sparkling afro, appears to glow with an inner light while reflecting the multicolored background, an inverse skyscape with black stars on fields of white and color.
This painting was created through the patient building of layers upon layers of acrylic paint to create depth and saturation. Her body, covered in a network of stars, swirls, and stylized celestial objects, was subsequently layered in black and dark green paints but subtle texture remains, visible at an angle.
